Until now when Blizzard released new patch for Warcraft 3 you have two choices when updating to latest patch version.
You could start up Battle.net and game would download and update patch automatically or you could download patch manually and manually install it.
Since patch 1.28 you can't download patch and install it offline but you need to use Warcraft 3 Launcher.
To download Warcraft 3 Launcher navigate to:
https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/Patching-Classic-Games
and chose you game and version. Both Mac and Windows versions are available.

Run the Battle.net desktop app in Administrator Mode to address many installation, patching, networking, and start-up errors. Run the repair tool to repair any damaged game files.
